The biggest change is obviously starting sophomore Zach Smith at quarterback. Anu Solomon is reportedly in concussion protocol and will miss the game, so freshman Charlie Brewer will back him up.

Baylor also made several changes along both lines. Sam Tecklenberg will start at center, while Ish Wilson takes the left guard spot. On the other side, Xavier Jones and converted linebacker Deonte Williams will take over the defensive end spots. They replace incumbent starters Xavier Jones and Brian Nance at the position.

Converted wide receiver Blake Lynch also officially gets the start at cornerback over Jameson Houston, who recently returned from injury. Starting defensive tackle K.J. Smith remains out with shin splints, so Micheal Johnson will play in his place.

Baylor football is possibly in the most turmoil of any program in the country right now. Sophomore Zach Smith could turn that around.

Baylor football is getting off to one of its worst starts in the history of the team. Baylor should have had two easy victories in their first two games against the Liberty Flames out of the FCS and the UTSA Roadrunners. However, both Liberty and UTSA defeated Baylor to give the Bears an 0-2 start to the 2017 season. Yet, the naming of sophomore quarterback Zach Smith as the starter could breath new life into the program.

Opening Statement:
“First of all, thank you guys for coming, especially in the morning. As we finish practice and have our press conference, we appreciate you guys being here.

Obviously, I’ll start with the quarterback situation. I’m excited for Zach [Smith] to have an opportunity to go play. I’m proud of Anu [Solomon], and the way he went out and competed. Anu came in on Sunday and felt banged up and felt beat up. He had some symptoms, maybe concussion-like, so immediately our medical staff put him in the protocol, and I told Zach he would be the starter. I texted Zach Saturday night and told him he was going to play this week after the game regardless. I had to wait and see the film, and I never really got a chance to see the film before I had spoken with Anu who was waiting for you. So that way, just to give you that backstory, Zach will be the starter and Charlie will be the backup this week, and we’ll go from there.

Now, he does.

With Solomon in concussion protocol after Saturday’s 17-10 loss to UTSA, Smith will get the starting nod when the Bears (0-2) face Duke (2-0) at 11:30 a.m. CDT Saturday in Durham, N.C.

Baylor University offered a letter of support for former head football coach Art Briles that helped him briefly land a job as offensive coordinator for the CFL’s Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

Hamilton Tiger-Cats CEO Scott Mitchell cited a “tsunami of negativity” from fans and media in the United States as one of the main reasons why the Canadian Football League team reversed its decision to hire former Baylorcoach Art Briles.

Mitchell addressed the controversial decision during a radio interview Tuesday with SN590 The Fan in Toronto, reiterating that he thought Briles deserved a second chance to coach. Mitchell acknowledged, however, that the Tiger-Cats underestimated the negative reaction that would follow the announcement of Briles’ hiring.

A female Baylor student who says she was raped by two former Bears football players in April 2016 filed a federal Title IX lawsuit Friday against the university alleging it denied her academic help and continues to retaliate against her.

She is one of three women in the lawsuit filed in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas. It is the 10th lawsuit filed against Baylor since March 2016, and one of seven still pending.
