CLEMSON, discount S.C. —Clemson is ranked second in the preseason Associated Press poll released on Sunday.   Clemson was also second in the Amway Coaches Poll released earlier in the month.

This is the highest preseason ranking in Clemson history in either of the major polls.  Clemson was fourth in the preseason poll by the Coaches and the Associated Press in 1988, remedy and fourth by Associated Press in 1984.

This also marks the fifth straight year Clemson has been ranked in the preseason of both polls.  Clemson was 14th in the preseason of both polls in 2012, eighth in 2013, 16th in 2014 and 12th in the preseason last year.

Clemson, Alabama, Oregon and Florida State are the only schools in the country to finish in the top 25 of the final AP poll each of the last five years.  Dabo Swinney’s program is the only school in the nation to finish the same or better in the final poll than its preseason ranking each of the last five years.

The appearance in the preseason AP poll means Clemson has appeared  in 76 of the  last 83 AP polls (all polls since beginning of 2011 season), tied for fifth in the nation with Oregon.

“I love Clemson, and I believe in our program, and I feel like Clemson has been pulling for me since that first game in 2008,” Swinney said in a statement. “But no matter how much we win on the field, my passion is building and empowering successful young men through the game of football. Kathleen and I are blessed. And we have always known we need to use those blessings to do good for others. It’s so important to us that we give back to this program that has been so good to us.”

Clemson head football coach Dabo Swinney and No. 2-ranked Tigers will face former Clemson defensive coordinator Kevin Steele Saturday when Clemson plays at Auburn in a key early season matchup.

Swinney fired Steele after Clemson’s Orange Bowl debacle of 2011, when the Tigers surrendered a bowl-record 70 points in a 70-33 loss to West Virginia.

“It was very difficult because I have a tremendous amount of respect for Coach Steele,” Swinney said. “He is a great football coach, a great man with a great family.

“Coach Steele was a huge part of us laying a foundation here in ’09, 10 and 11. He helped us win our first ACC Championship in 20 years.”

Steele has had stints with Alabama, LSU and Auburn since, but this will be his first time facing Swinney and Clemson’s prolific offense, which hopes to get off to a solid start following last season’s 14-1 record and national runner-up finish.

Clemson’s Offensive Line VS. Auburn’s Defensive Line

“”Our defensive front has the chance to be one of the best, if not the best, in college football,” Auburn Head Coach Gus Malzahn said in a post-practice interview this spring. He could be right. Auburn is returning six linemen who have some playing experience, including three starters. ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreit said the following about “Clemsoning” on Saturday’s version of ESPN College GameDay – “See, I think they changed this mentality four years ago,” Herbstreit said. “This to me is just old news. Clemson is not the ‘Clemsoning’. They don’t do that anymore. If they lose today, it’s because Georgia Tech out-executed them.
