LOS ANGELES — There was no calamitous final scene or epic fourth-quarter meltdowns, no freak occurrence or debilitating in-game injury. The Los Angeles Clippers watched the clock tick down in their 104-91 Game 7 loss to the Utah Jazz — and consequently, their season. They exchanged the usual post-series pleasantries and hugs with their conquerors, then walked through the northeast tunnel at Staples Center, heads down.

The Clippers dropped their final game of the 2016-17 season not because they couldn’t surmount mental hurdles, but because they were outmatched tactically.

The Utah Jazz eliminated the LA Clippers from the 2017 NBA playoffs on Sunday and to no surprise, two newspapers covering the New York Knicks have already started up the Carmelo Anthony trade speculation.

OAKLAND, Calif. — It’s safe to say that the Golden State Warriors were pulling for the LA Clippers to advance past the Utah Jazz in the first round of the Western Conference playoffs.

Their rooting interest, however, had nothing to do with matchups on the basketball court. Rather, it had everything to do with where they will spend their leisure hours when the second-round series shifts to Games 3 and 4.

The Los Angeles Clippers are accustomed to things not going their way, but that doesn’t make this most-recent era of futility any easier to explain. Sunday’s Game 7 loss to the Utah Jazz meant the Clippers had done what seemed impossible but felt all-too-familiar: coughed up a playoff series lead. It marked an unprecedented fifth straight postseason in which the Clippers had blown a series lead before bowing out. The club has been one of the NBA’s best for more than a half decade, winning 60 percent of its games each of the past six seasons. Yet, during that span, it has somehow failed to reach the Western finals even once.

Forward Blake Griffin underwent surgery Monday on his injured right big toe, the Los Angeles Clippers announced.

Griffin injured the plantar plate of the toe April 21 in Game 3 of the Clippers’ first-round playoff series against the Utah Jazz and was ruled out for the rest of the season.

The Jazz ended the Clippers’ season on Sunday in Game 7.

LOS ANGELES — It felt like an egg race — someone balancing an oval object on a spoon and scurrying to the finish. It wasn’t a between-quarters event sponsored by the American Egg Board, though. The Los Angeles Clippers sprung back from a disheartening Game 1 loss, claiming a 99-91 wire-to-wire victory over the Utah Jazz in the Western Conference playoffs on Tuesday night at Staples Center.

But for much of the night, a double-digit lead seemed tenuous and laced with trepidation.

There are four Los Angeles Lakers statues in front of Staples Center: Hall of Famers Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Jerry West and a 9-foot, 1,200-pound hanging Shaquille O’Neal. Late Hall of Fame Lakers announcer Chick Hearn is featured on the sidewalk just off Chick Hearn Court. Former Los Angeles Kings hockey star Wayne Gretzky and boxer Oscar De La Hoya also have statues, and ex-Lakers star Kobe Bryant is likely next in line.

SALT LAKE CITY — Utah Jazz center Rudy Gobert will not play in Game 3 against the Los Angeles Clippers on Friday after hyperextending his left knee and suffering a bone contusion in the series opener.

The 7-foot-1 Frenchman went down 17 seconds into Game 1 when he knocked knees with Luc Mbah a Moute on the first possession. The Jazz won that game 97-95. The playoff series is tied 1-1.

Gobert, a Defensive Player of the Year candidate, led the league in blocks and defensive win shares. He also ranked third in defensive rating.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Buoyed by a newfound sense of urgency, the Clippers took it to the Utah Jazz from the opening tip. The patch of real estate under the basket was all theirs, all game.

Blake Griffin led a smash-mouth revival of Lob City with 24 points and DeAndre Jordan had a double-double in the Clippers’ 99-91 victory on Tuesday night that evened their playoff series at 1-1.
