ANN ARBOR — Eddie McDoom can only smile and thank his father.

There’s no real official stat for this, of course, but the 6-foot, 180-pound thunderbolt from Winter Garden, Florida may be the only player in Michigan’s storied history to bring 100,000-plus people together for a reverberating chant after his first touch as a college football player.

At this point, it’s an unofficial tradition. Home or away. Each time McDoom gets his hands on the football, Michigan fans blast out — in unison — an homage to his unique surname.

“DOOOOOM.”

“It’s just an awesome name,” he says. “My dad’s side had it. … I don’t really know the history of it.

“So I got lucky there.”

McDoom’s dad, Morris McDoom, is from Jamaica and was always a soccer fan first and foremost. That and martial arts.

His father — the man responsible for the coolest last name in college football — is a black belt. Per Eddie, Morris’ expertise came in Shaolin Kung Fu and he’s also an Eagle Claw master.

So, basically, he’s a ninja?

“Now that I think about that,” Eddie laughs, “that’s pretty cool.”
