ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP) Giorgio Tavecchio was ready to give up his dreams of kicking in the NFL and take a business job in London.

The pain of being cut six times without ever playing an NFL game had taken its toll mentally on Tavecchio and he was ready to move on before the Oakland Raiders gave him a call to come to camp for a fourth straight year as the backup to Sebastian Janikowski.

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) Jermaine Kearse is no fan of the Oakland Raiders’ home field.

The New York Jets wide receiver played at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum a couple of times while a member of the Seattle Seahawks, and there’s one aspect about it that drives him crazy.

”To be honest, I hate their field,” Kearse said with a big smile Wednesday. ”I can’t stand that baseball part of the field.”

The Raiders share the stadium with the Oakland Athletics, so when both teams’ seasons are underway simultaneously – as they are now – the field is converted from football to baseball, and vice versa. During Raiders games, the baseball diamond and infield dirt can be seen stretching from about the 50-yard line to the 20 on either side, with the football yard lines marked off across the field.

ALAMEDA, Calif. – Khalil Mack did not dominate the traditional statistics page in the Oakland Raiders‘ season-opening win over the Tennessee Titans. He had no sacks and a merely mortal three tackles.

But the reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year did not have to own the numbers, not when his presence was felt beyond the box score.

Two of those tackles went for a loss, and he also was credited with a pass defensed. And as Pro Football Focus saw it, Mack had five pressures against the pass and three stops against the run. Add it all up, and entering Monday night’s games his 93.8 PFF grade was the highest in the NFL among edge rushers.

ALAMEDA, Calif. — Perhaps the hardest hit Oakland Raiders undrafted rookie linebacker Nicholas Morrow took in his NFL debut?

A celebratory punch in the chest from teammate Bruce Irvin.

Morrow’s most satisfying hit, meanwhile, came seconds earlier, when the former Division III player stuffed DeMarco Murray for a 1-yard loss.

It was one of the bigger plays in the Raiders’ season-opening 26-16 victory at the Tennessee Titans on Sunday, a play that figures to open eyes on the Raiders’ staff and give Morrow more playing time going forward.

Especially with the New York Jets coming to town this weekend.

ALAMEDA, Calif. — So what if Donald Penn is in his 11th NFL season? The Oakland Raiders‘ Pro Bowl left tackle, whose holdout lasted through training camp and two preseason games, still gets a case of the nerves.

Especially with how little actual football work he got before the season opener against the Tennessee Titans.

“I’m not going to lie to you guys,” Penn told reporters this week, “but I was worried going into that dang game. I played a couple plays in that Dallas [preseason] game and then, in practice, I was pushing myself extra hard, [more] than I usually do, just trying to get ready. Because I really didn’t know.”

Penn said the Raiders’ staff had a plan in place to rotate at left tackle should he have needed a rest. Instead, he played all 66 snaps.

“I got an IV before the game, something I usually don’t do, just to be proactive. And then, once the [game] started flowing, I was surprised,” Penn said. “I was surprised in myself with how good of shape I was in and how I went through that game.”

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — Despite a rough start and a gloomy forecast for the season, New York Jets ownership believes general manager Mike Maccagnan is the right guy to rebuild their talent-starved roster.

But will Johnson & Johnson (Woody and Christopher) feel the same way about their third-year general manager if the team starts 0-10 or something similarly awful?

The Oakland Raiders found themselves in that situation in 2014. General manager Reggie McKenzie, in his third season, had gutted the roster, ridding it of old and overpaid players. It was a massive overhaul and everybody knew it would take time, but people started to wonder about his plan after 34 losses in 42 games, including an 0-10 start in 2014. He wound up building a championship-caliber roster, but there was a rock-bottom period where ownership could have hit the reset button.

ALAMEDA, Calif. — Which development should matter more to the Oakland Raiders — Amari Cooper showing a certain physicality on his 8-yard touchdown catch-and-bowl-over-the-defender, or his inability to come up with the ball on three straight passes to him from the 2-yard line?

They are of equal importance in that Oakland will take the first, thank you very much, while using the second as a teaching moment heading into Sunday’s home opener against the New York Jets.

LAS VEGAS — The public got its first glimpse Thursday at an Oakland Raidersstadium document designed to ensure the participation of minorities, small businesses and others in the planned project.

The outline of the community benefits plan was unveiled during a meeting of the public board that oversees the proposed project. The plan, required by state law, includes targets for small business participation and calls on the team to carry out community outreach programs. It is meant to ensure the greatest possible participation by the local community in the design, construction and operation of the $1.9 billion project.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) Ezekiel Elliott has made his preseason cameo.

Now the star Dallas running back waits to see if his regular-season debut will be on hold until late October.

Elliott had eight touches in 10 plays in his only series of the exhibition season with a looming six-game suspension for domestic violence before undrafted rookie Cooper Rush rallied the Cowboys with two touchdown passes in a 24-20 win over the Oakland Raiders on Saturday night.
