Ireland manager Martin O’Neill has confirmed that he has agreed a new contract with the FAI, which will extend his tenure as manager until the European Championships in 2020.

O’Neill hinted earlier at Thursday afternoon’s press conference that there was a “willingness” to stay in the job beyond next summer’s World Cup, and the Derry man confirmed that he has agreed to extend his contract.

Speaking to FAI TV, O’Neill said that his initial doubts about international football have been banished following a successful first term in charge, which led the Ireland team to Euro 2016 last summer.

And O’Neill also admitted that he believes that the future of Irish football is bright with several new players breaking into the senior squad, and he is excited about the future.

NEW ROCHELLE – History is repeating itself.

And even though Mamaroneck earned a thrilling 1-0 win at New Rochelle on Thursday, it’s not a welcome development.

It was the Tigers’ second win of the season over the Huguenots.

The same thing happened last fall, but Mamaroneck lost to New Rochelle on penalty kicks in a Section 1 Class AA quarterfinal.

Both sides would be happy to go again in the playoffs later this month.

“There’s a lot more at stake if that happens,” Tigers forward Cole DiCicco said. “It would be like last year. … It would be intense.”

No doubt.

It’s not uncommon for wealthy sports stars to be obsessed with golf. And it’s not uncommon for wealthy sports stars who are obsessed with golf to build practice areas at their homes for practice. That’s what being wealthy allows one to do (or so I hear).

What is uncommon, however, is for wealthy sports stars who are obsessed with golf to build practice areas that is a replica of a signature golf hole. And that the replica might rival the actual golf hole their copying.

This is all a long way of saying Gareth Bale, we salute you. The Welsh football star who plays for Real Madrid has built a version of the 17th hole at TPC Sawgrass that had us wondering if he had bought up the Stadium Course from the PGA Tour. Nope, this is at Bale’s “backyard” at his home in Wales.

A new hotbed of American soccer culture has a stadium worthy of being the U.S.’ go-to venue.

ORLANDO, Fla. – The office was about a half-mile away from where the U.S. men’s national team will step onto the field Friday night, and it had a broken air conditioner and just one copy machine.

In the window was a sign that had images of a globe and a coffee mug, and inside the building, 10 volunteers worked to bring an event called the World Cup to Orlando. Some of them didn’t even know what the tournament was when they signed up to help.

Nearly three decades after that group first formed, the city has a chance to essentially reverse that task. Instead of bringing the World Cup to Orlando, fans would like to help send the U.S. men’s national team to the sport’s biggest tournament.

A victory Friday night over Panama at Orlando City Stadium in a must-win qualifier would be a massive step in that direction.

Which plan for a new jail should Wayne County go with? See the details on proposals from Dan Gilbert and Walsh Construction. John Gallagher, Detroit Free Press

A tentative deal to swap the massive former American Motors headquarters in Detroit in exchange for 11 acres of city-owned land needed to build a new criminal justice complex near I-75  has been reached— bringing the $520.3-million offer from billionaire developer Dan Gilbert’s Rock Ventures, one step closer to fruition.

The agreement between Wayne County and the City of Detroit comes after officials told the Free Press last week that negotiations were ongoing and both sides were optimistic an agreement would be reached soon.

The deal also pushes forward an effort by a group led by Gilbert and Pistons owner Tom Gores to build a 23,000-seat stadium on the unfinished Gratiot jail site to host a Major League Soccer team. The investment has been estimated at $1 billion. The application for an expansion team filed in January listed only the jail site as a location.

MILFORD — It has been quite some time since the Law girls soccer team has been the talk of the city, let alone the Southern Connecticut Conference.

The team may have to get used to it.

Behind two goals by Grace Wootton and a stifling defense, Law won its fourth straight game with a 4-0 victory over crosstown rival Foran in a SCC interdivision contest at the Vito DeVito Sports Complex at Foran High Wednesday evening.

“We are undefeated so far and that momentum keeps driving us every game,” Wootton said. “After (coach J.D.) Rhode’s pep talk, we played our game. He told us to just play soccer. That’s what we did.”

Following in the footsteps of Tony Romo or new Miami Marlins ownerDerek Jeter isn’t in Peyton Manning’s playbook.

“I keep looking for that $2.5 billion in my pocket. Just don’t see it,” the now retired, two-time Super Bowl champion told Sports Illustrated. “Derek will be great in that role, I have such great respect for him. I’m happy for him. … I enjoy teaching football.

“I love paying it forward if anybody has any questions … just probably not in the coaching world. An executive role of some sort, who knows, it is a possibility but it’s all pretty futuristic.”

Less than two years have passed since the Sheriff finished his final rodeo at Super Bowl 50, with the Broncos defeating the Carolina Panthers 24-10, Manning, 41, has enjoyed the quiet suburban life of Denver, traveling with wife Ashley and tending to their children, including 5-year-old twins Marshall and Moseley.
