Her first two years in high school, Glenbrook North junior Maggie Myers played nothing but outside hitter for the Spartans’ lower-level teams. So when varsity coach Tiffany Kim told Myers that the team needed her to be the the starting varsity libero this season, Myers’ initial reaction was predictable.

“It was shocking,” Myers said. “But I wanted to be a part of the team, no matter where I played.”

While a hitter must also defend, a libero — planted in the back row, digging out opponents’ serves and kill attempts — is forced to leave the fun of hitting behind.
