The College Football Playoff committee is assigned to grade worthiness. But what if its job was simply to deliver the most entertaining four teams in college football?

I will postulate here that the No. 1 seed would be Penn State. Give me Clemson at No. 2 and maybe Colorado at No. 3, then fill in with whomever you like.

But think about the history of Penn State football and then consider this truth: The Nittany Lions are more fun to watch than any team in the Big Ten for certain and I think you could put them on top of the heap nationally.

Through a basketball lens, they remind me of the 2001 Nittany Lions of Titus Ivory, Joe Crispin and Gyasi Cline-Heard that made the Sweet 16 and led the Big Ten in points scored, points allowed, crazy comebacks executed, steals, odds beaten, big finishes and impediments overcome.

But from a Penn State football standpoint? There’s never been anything like this team in school annals in terms of surprising overachievement and sheer entertainment delivered. That’s partly due to Penn State’s establishment status and party due to its generally bland style over the years. This outfit stands alone.

You can eyeball it or bolster it with metrics. I’ve done both. Consider the attributes, some supported by The Stat Mine:

Last week, Texas A&M was the surprise No. 4 team in the College Football Playoff rankings. After losing to Mississippi State last Saturday and proving it doesn’t belong at the top, we’ll see a new team take over the fourth spot this week when the rankings are unveiled at 7 p.m. Tuesday on ESPN.

The top three should stay the same, as Alabama, Clemson and Michigan all won. The question this week is whether another one-loss team has the resume to jump undefeated Washington for the fourth spot in the rankings, or if the Huskies will claim the spot that should have been theirs last week.

The newest edition of the College Football Playoff rankings were released Tuesday and Tennessee was ranked in the Top 25.

The No. 25 Vols were represented in the ranking for the first time this season at the tail end of the team’s five-game winning streak.

The ranking comes after the Vols’ dominating 53-28 over Vanderbilt on Saturday. Tennessee has not lost a game since Oct. 24, pills when it fell to Alabama, order 19-14, in Tuscaloosa, Ala. Since that point, the Vols have started playing some of their best football under coach Butch Jones, and clearly the Playoff committee has taken notice.

Ohio State didn’t win its conference — or its division, for that matter — and as a result, the Buckeyes won’t have a chance to repeat as national champions of college football.

However, Urban Meyer’s Buckeyes check in at No. 7 in the final set of College Football Playoff rankings released Sunday afternoon. They are set to take on No. 8 Notre Dame (10-2) in the Fiesta Bowl. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. EST New Year’s Day.

Saturday’s 42-13 annhilation of the #10 Michigan Wolverines taught us one thing about the #8 Ohio State Buckeyes — they’re just as dangerous and championship-worthy as they were last year.
