CLEVELAND, Ohio — After over a year away from the game, Johnny Manziel is ready to attempt another NFL comeback.

Following a series of tweets earlier this week hinting he’s happy and healthy, the former Browns quarterback texted ESPN reporter Ed Werder making clear his intentions to return to football.

As evidenced in Werder’s tweets, Manziel says he is sober through his own doing, unlike his prior reported sobriety following a stay in a Pennsylvania rehab facility after his rookie season in Cleveland.

Though Manziel entered his second season with the Browns reportedly sober, it didn’t last as alcohol was the cause of accusations and reports throughout his second NFL season.

Following the 2015 season, which ended with allegations of domestic violence and problems with alcohol, the 24-year-old was released by the Browns in March of 2016.

He subsequently signed with well-known agent Drew Rosenhaus, who dumped him soon after for failing to believe Manziel was serious about football.

The former Heisman Trophy winner went through the entirety of the 2016 NFL season as a free agent and throughout his year away from the game, he was seen at numerous parties and bars with alcohol in-hand.

The domestic violence charge against Manziel — the one in which he was accused of assaulting then-girlfriend Colleen Crowley — was dismissed in early December.

Most recently, Manziel was spotted at a club in Miami for New Year’s Eve, holding a bottle of champagne and surrounded by women.

Manziel, who won the Heisman Trophy in 2012 and led the Aggies to a 20-6 record in 2012 and 2013, was last on the football field in 2015 with the Cleveland Browns but was released by the team in March. He did not sign with another team this offseason.
