Woodbridge resident Nelson Martinez was one of 20 players selected to represent the U.S. U-16 Boys National Soccer Team at the 45th Tournoi de Montaigu. The 12-nation tournament runs April 7-18 in Montaigu, France.
The U.S. begins group play Tuesday at 12:30 p.m. against Belgium followed by a game April 13 at 12:30 p.m. against Japan. If the Americans win their group, they will advance to the semifinals April 15. The final is April 17. The U.S. won the title in 2016.

First Down: Roster shaping up at wide receiver

Watching Texas commit Damion Miller run wild at the 7-on-7 state tournament Friday, order I couldn’t help but think about how the Longhorns are finally figuring things out at wide receiver. The fact Texas hasn’t had a first-team All-Big 12 skill position player since Jordan Shipley is alarming, but it’s also frustrating since the issues on the outside could have been avoided.

Texas has certainly struggled at wide receiver due to erratic quarterback play. Nevertheless, the Longhorns went through a period from the 2009 to 2014 recruiting classes where 19 receiver signings have yielded only three All-Big 12 players (Mike Davis, John Harris and Jaxon Shipley) entering the 2016 season. There were once high hopes for the likes of Greg Timmons, Darius White, Chris Jones, Cayleb Jones, Kendall Sanders and Montrel Meander, players who either transferred or were dismissed from the program within their first two years. Add that to an undefined offensive scheme since Colt McCoy left the Forty Acres, and the issues have compounded.
